On the 1 November 1937 the Adjutant-General Sir Harry Knox writes to Brigadier F. B. Hurndall, Colonel of the Regiment, informing him that the final decision has been made to mechanise the 14th/20th King’s Hussars.
In January 1938, the 14th/20th King’s Hussars went out on manoeuvres on horseback in India for the last time and in August, the Regiment bade farewell to its horses in a mounted parade at Lucknow, India. In November the first Vickers light tanks arrived with a training team under Captain Ramsey from the Royal Tank Corps, apparently no officer spoke to him for a week!
On 31 March 1939, the 14th/20th King’s Hussars were officially converted to a mechanised regiment and soon became part of the newly-formed Royal Armoured Corps.
