Lt George Newman Caswall

This portrait is believed to be that of Lt George Newman Caswall of the 14th Light Dragoons, c.1811.

Caswall was commissioned as a Cornet in Sept 1810, aged about 16. He served in the Peninsular War from 1811 to 1813 including at the Battles of El Bodón + Salamanca.

From the inscription it is believed that the drawing was by his eldest sister, Susan Constantia Caswall, in March 1812 from an original by Henry Edridge.

The family lived at Sacombe Park, Hertfordshire. George died aged 32 on 31 May 1826 and is buried at St Catherine’s Sacombe.
